The good kind of bigger

The good kind of bigger

There is a bad kind of bigger - you know, where the waistline gets bigger or the estimate for that home repair and the reality of the cost involved gets bigger and bigger and bigger. Those are the bad kind of bigger.

Then, there is the good kind of bigger.

This quick quote gets me every time. I know, I know - it’s the trifecta of Christian quotes, Tolkien, Lewis, or Keller. A book I’m currently reading with our Precept Team quoted Lewis. The author, Ken Boa, uses it to set up a chapter entitled Dependence on God.

‘Aslan, you’re bigger,’ she says
’That is because you’re older, little one,’ answered he.
’Not because you are?’
’I am not. But every year you grow, you will find me bigger.’
— C.S. Lewis, Prince Caspian

Reading this again got to me.

Maybe it is because I’m fresh off of reading Prince Caspian to my kids. Maybe it is because I might be tempted to be so nose to the grindstone right now. Maybe it is because there are some really big things going on with some people that I know. Whichever it is - I thought about how this tiny quote might sit with Precept Leaders and Sojourners.

It has led me to take some time to think, to stop looking at the next step or two on the path and to take my gaze up and back at where the Lord has led on this sojourn journey.

“…every year you will find me bigger.”

May I encourage you to do the same today?

Find a few minutes, allow the Spirit of God to take your gaze from the immediate, must-dos of the now - the tyranny of the urgent - and to look back at where our good king has led you. Look back where the journey started with Jesus. Consider the winding road, the mountains and the valleys. No matter where you are right now, in the depths, grinding it out in perseverance and faith, or taking in the mountain top air - he is bigger.

Take a few minutes and just tell him how amazing He is!

Special thanks to Prince David on Unsplash for the fantastic photo!
